We recently welcomed Emma back to our accounts team. Emma left us to embark on an ACA qualification at another firm but decided to come back and finish her qualification with us at Ormerod Rutter. We asked her why she decided to come back to the OR family.

What made you want to become an accountant and what do you like most about your role?
When I graduated from university with a degree in Classical Studies, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I tried teaching, production, and advertising, but finally ended up working for my dad (also an accountant) during the busy January tax return season. I soon realised accountancy isn’t all about numbers; there’s an element of helping people too. An accountant’s role – especially as we move into the more automated making tax digital era – is an advisory role. You get the chance to problem solve, guide and support your clients with their business and livelihood.
What made you want to come back, and what’s the best thing about OR?
I started my career with Ormerod Rutter as a bookkeeper in early 2019. The team were so supportive in my training and boosted my confidence to no end. Having reached a part-qualified level in an auditor role at another firm, I decided to return and continue my career (and the remainder of my qualification) at OR. The environment here is so welcoming – it is all the positives of large firm culture, without the corporate stuffiness.
My fiancé also works at Ormerod Rutter (it’s where we met), so car sharing is a benefit too!
What would you say to someone thinking of becoming an accountant?
Don’t be put off by the exams, they are a very minor part of a highly rewarding and satisfying career.
